Our latest article, "Robustness and Safety of Net-Based Debris Capture Under Deployment and Environmental Uncertainties," has been published on the AIAA Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets!
In the article, we analyzed the limitations and operational envelope of tethered net systems in capturing space debris, focusing particularly on robustness and safety. The success of capture in nonnominal conditions was investigated, with errors considered in the target position, angular velocity, and parameters concerning the ejection of the net. The quantitative relationships between relative parameter errors and capture evaluation metrics are also presented in the study. Overall, the findings confirm that the capture system is robust to inaccuracies in the mission parameters beyond what is expected in reality. With 525 unique simulations examined, this study is the largest-scale robustness analysis of a net-based ADR system performed to date.
